ABSTRACT Different products have been tested to increase the vase life of cut flowers after harvest such as the biodegradable films. These products have been used in fruits since the application on the surface may provide the modification of the atmosphere around it, although, there is no information for flowers. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of cassava starch films as a postharvest product for Red Torch Ginger inflorescences. On the first experiment, different starch concentrations in the solution were tested and in the second experiment starch, concentrations with plasticizers and adjuvants were evaluated. The application of the biodegradable film in Red Torch stems acted as a barrier to the gases, as observed by their water absorption rate and the maintenance of fresh weight, maintaining postharvest quality up to Day 6. The visual quality was better in the inflorescences treated with 6% starch and in the films without additives. The use of 6% starch films led to lower contents of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation and higher levels of primary-metabolism macromolecules up to Day 6, delaying senescence and increasing postharvest durability. The addition of glycerol plasticizer to the different film concentrations improved the film resistance characteristics. It is recommended the use of films based on cassava starch at a concentration of 6%. The use of the adjuvant is not essential since it changed the film’s characteristics, leaving it less transparent and more viscous, hindering drying.

RESUMO Diferentes produtos foram testados para aumentar a durabilidade de flores de corte após a colheita, como filmes biodegradáveis. Estes produtos têm sido utilizados em frutas desde que a aplicação na superfície proporciona a modificação da atmosfera ao seu redor. Embora, não haja informações sobre o uso desses produtos para flores. O objetivo foi avaliar a eficácia de filmes de amido de mandioca como produto pós-colheita para inflorescências de Red Torch Ginger. No primeiro experimento foram testadas diferentes concentrações de amido na solução e no segundo experimento foram avaliadas concentrações de amido com plastificantes e adjuvantes. A aplicação do filme biodegradável em hastes de bastão-do-imperador atuou como uma barreira aos gases, como observado pela sua taxa de absorção de água e a manutenção do peso fresco, mantendo a qualidade pós-colheita até o Dia 6. A qualidade visual foi melhor nas inflorescências tratadas com 6% de amido e nos filmes sem aditivos. O uso de filmes com 6% de amido levou a menores teores de peróxido de hidrogênio e peroxidação lipídica e maiores teores de macromoléculas de metabolismo primário até o Dia 6, retardando a senescência e aumentando a durabilidade pós-colheita. A adição do plastificante glicerol às diferentes concentrações de filme melhorou as características de resistência do filme. Assim, recomenda-se o uso de filmes à base de amido de mandioca na concentração de 6%. O uso do adjuvante não é essencial, pois alterou as características do filme, deixando-o menos transparente e mais viscoso, dificultando a secagem.

Abstract The ornamental plant sector is growing due to the development of new species and technologies. The focus of research is to extend the shelf life of cut flowers to maintain quality and customer satisfaction. Techniques such as storage at low temperatures, use of preservative solutions, and new technologies such as nanotechnology can help maintain the quality of the floral stem. The present review aims to analyze various techniques used to extend the post-harvest shelf life of floral stems. For this purpose, a systematic search was conducted on major indexing platforms for studies published in 2023, which were subjected to a meta-analysis. The global effect size and moderator effects were calculated to assist in decision-making for future studies in floriculture. The results indicated that the addition of preservatives to solutions, variations in storage temperature, and the use of electromagnetic fields were the most effective techniques in extending the shelf life of cut flowers. However, techniques such as dry conditioning and the use of coating films did not show significant results in maintaining commercial quality. It was found that conservative solution research is still the main focus of research at major cut flower technology centers. The meta-analysis highlights the importance of further deepening and/or improving research on techniques that have shown less effective results, and developing new technologies to prolong the vase life of floral stems in order to improve post-harvest quality.

Resumo O setor de plantas ornamentais está crescendo devido ao desenvolvimento de novas espécies e tecnologias. O foco da pesquisa é estender a vida útil das flores cortadas para manter a qualidade e a satisfação do cliente. Técnicas como armazenamento em baixas temperaturas, uso de soluções conservantes e novas tecnologias como a nanotecnologia podem ajudar a manter a qualidade da haste floral. A presente revisão tem como objetivo analisar diversas técnicas utilizadas para prolongar a vida útil de hastes florais pós-colheita. Para tal, foi realizada uma busca sistemática nas principais plataformas indexadoras de estudos publicados em 2023, os quais foram submetidos a uma meta-análise. Calculou-se o tamanho do efeito global e o efeito por moderadores, com o intuito de auxiliar na tomada de decisão para futuros estudos na floricultura. Os resultados indicaram que a adição de conservantes nas soluções, variações nas temperaturas de armazenamento e o uso de campos eletromagnéticos foram as técnicas mais eficazes para prolongar a vida útil das hastes florais em vasos. No entanto, técnicas como o condicionamento a seco e o uso de filmes de revestimento não apresentaram resultados significativos em manter a qualidade comercial. Foi verificado que as pesquisas com soluções conservantes ainda são o principal foco dos trabalhos de grandes centros de tecnologia de flores de corte. A meta-análise destaca a importância de aprofundar e/ou aperfeiçoar as pesquisas em técnicas que apresentaram resultados menos eficazes e desenvolver novas tecnologias para prolongar a vida útil das hastes florais, a fim de melhorar a qualidade pós-colheita.

ABSTRACT Dry conditioning and sucrose pulsing are techniques used to improve the durability of flower stems. Dry conditioning helps to balance the osmotic potential of the flower stems and can be applied after harvest and transportation. The objective was to evaluate how different dry conditioning times followed by sucrose pulsing may affect the postharvest quality, durability, and physiological aspects of torch ginger flower stems. For this purpose, flower stems were collected and submitted to dry conditioning for different periods: 0-h, 3-h, 6-h, 12-h, and 24-h. Every 3 days, visual quality, percentage of true flowers, absorption rate, water content, fresh and dry weights, and colorimetric parameters were evaluated. The concentration of pigments, biochemistry of the antioxidant system, and macromolecules were analyzed. Dry conditioning for more than 12-h is not recommended as it leads to a loss of quality and durability in torch ginger flower stems and accelerates senescence. The absorption rate decreases and pigments break down after this period, while H2O2 and lipid peroxidation concentrations increase. Furthermore, sugar and protein reserves are consumed during senescence. It is recommended to hydrate harvested stems immediately to avoid the negative effects of dry conditioning on postharvest quality and durability.

Resumo: O vigor de sementes é uma das principais limitações para atender ao exigente mercado de forrageiras. A fim de impulsionar o potencial produtivo e propiciar o desenvolvimento satisfatório de sementes e mudas de qualidade, é necessário desenvolver técnicas que propiciem qualidade e alta produtividade. Tendo o gênero Urochloa destaque na produção e qualidade de sementes, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do condicionamento fisiológico de sementes com nitroprussiato e definir o melhor método de secagem que permita a manutenção das alterações deste tratamento em sementes de Urochloa ruziziensis. As sementes foram condicionadas em solução de nitroprussiato de sódio, como um doador de óxido nítrico, por 42 horas e posteriormente submetidas aos procedimentos: sem secagem, redução inicial do teor de água, choque térmico, secagem lenta e rápida. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com dez tratamentos e quatro repetições. Foram realizados teste de teor de água, germinação, emergência e avaliações bioquímicas. Como resultados, foi observado que todos os métodos de secagem avaliados reduziram o teor de água das sementes a 12%, faixa recomendada de armazenamento, com exceção do tratamento sem secagem que apresentou 30%. Com relação aos parâmetros germinativos, o tratamento de redução inicial e secagem rápida obteve melhor desempenho na germinação e emergência. Além disso, os tipos de secagem apresentaram alta taxa de atividade enzimática do sistema antioxidante, auxiliando assim na manutenção da homeostase redox. De acordo com a atividade enzimática e as taxas de germinação, sugere que o método de secagem rápida após o priming com óxido nítrico seja o melhor método para Urochloa ruziziensis.

Abstract: Seed vigor is one of the main limitations to meet the demanding forage market. In order to boost the productive potential and provide the satisfactory development of quality seeds and seedlings, it is necessary to develop techniques that provide quality and high productivity. With the Urochloa genus stands out in the seed production and quality, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of seed priming with sodium nitroprusside and to define the best drying method that allows the maintenance of the changes of this treatment in Urochloa ruziziensis seeds. The seeds were conditioned in sodium nitroprusside solution, as a nitric oxide donor, for 42 hours and later submitted to the following procedures: no drying, initial reduction of water content, thermal shock, slow and fast drying. The design was completely randomized, with ten treatments and four replications. Water content, germination, emergence and biochemical evaluations were performed. As results, it was observed that all drying methods evaluated reduced the water content of the seeds to 12%, recommended range for storage, with the exception of the treatment without drying that presented 30%. Regarding germination parameters, the treatment of initial reduction and quick drying obtained the best performance in germination and emergence. Moreover, the types of drying presented high rate of enzymatic activity of the antioxidant system, thus helping in the maintenance of redox homeostasis. According to the enzymatic activity and germination rates, it suggests that the rapid drying method after priming with nitric oxide is the best method for Urochloa ruziziensis.

ABSTRACT Toxic metals have become some of the main abiotic agents that influence the stress of organisms due to their numerous agricultural and industrial uses that result in bioaccumulation and toxicity at different levels, depending on the type and concentration in the environment. Aluminum and lead are present as a result of anthropogenic activities and cause soil contamination and, consequently, pollution effects on producers such as plants. In this review, we used meta-analysis techniques to assess the effect of aluminum and lead on plant physiology. We calculated the overall effect size for the response variables photosynthesis, maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II and plastid pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids). Moreover, it was possible to test the the effect of each metal and the phylogenetic relationship for the probability of Fabaceae species to respond to the pollution caused by these heavy metals, due to the number of studies found using this family. Overall, exposure to the toxic metals at high magnitudes affects photosynthesis and chlorophyll b (by reducing its amount). When considering the effect of each metal separately, aluminum reduced the content of the chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. However, lead reduced photosynthesis, maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II and chlorophyll b. When considering the Fabaceae species, there was no reduction of the parameters analyzed under stress by toxic metals. Therefore, our results confirm that these toxic metals (aluminum and lead) are toxic to plant physiology, mainly affecting the efficiency of the photosynthetic system and the plastid content.

Resumo: A resposta germinativa de sementes submetidas à condição de estresses artificiais é uma ferramenta para melhor entendimento da capacidade de sobrevivência e adaptação das espécies em condições de estresses naturais. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito protetor do óxido nítrico durante a germinação e vigor de sementes e desenvolvimento de plântulas de Eucalyptus urophylla sob condições de estresse salino. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com cinco repetições, em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 + 1, sendo três condicionantes (água, nitroprussiato de sódio - SNP e nitrato de potássio), três condições de germinação (água destilada, e os potenciais de -0,6 e -1,2 MPa), tendo como tratamento adicional, o controle (semente não condicionada). Determinou-se: contagem da germinação aos sete e quatorze dias, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento da raiz primária, de parte aérea e total. O SNP protege as sementes possibilitando maior porcentagem de germinação, assim como promove maior crescimento de raiz e tamanho total de plântula, já o KNO3 não é eficaz protegendo as sementes, as quais sofrem com estresse salino, o que afeta suas características fisiológicas e morfológicas. Sementes de E. urophylla são sensíveis ao estresse salino e o condicionamento fisiológico com SNP promove o aumento da porcentagem de germinação, vigor e desenvolvimento de plântulas sob condições de salinidade.

Abstract: The germination response of seeds under artificial stress conditions is a tool for better understanding of the survival and adaptation ability of species under natural stress conditions. The aims of this study were to evaluate the protective effect of nitric oxide during germination as well as seed vigor and seedling development of Eucalyptus urophylla under salt stress conditions. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five replications, in a 3 × 3 + 1 factorial arrangement, with three priming factors [water, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), and potassium nitrate (KNO3)], three germination conditions (distilled water, and the water potentials of -0.6 and -1.2 MPa), and an additional control treatment (unprimed seeds). The following determinations were made: germination count at seven and fourteen days, germination speed index, primary root length, shoot length, and total length. SNP protects seeds, leading to a higher percentage of germination, as well as greater root growth and total seedling size, whereas KNO3 is not effective in protecting seeds that suffer from salt stress, which affects their physiological and morphological characteristics. E. urophylla seeds are sensitive to salt stress, and physiological priming with SNP leads to an increase in the percentage of germination, vigor, and seedling development under salinity conditions.
